Driving range activity grows
GME Spring 2002
CHERWELL, Oxfordshire - "60,000 metres cubed of inert fill material was imported to this site" explained Contour
Golf's Ingrid Eichler who continued, "We were called in once it was in place and we shaped a driving range to a Ken
Moodie design." Cherwell Golf Club came under new ownership at the beginning of 2001 and the redesign and rebuild
of the driving range was a top priority for the new owners. Five, sand based target greens were built with full drainage
throughout the range. Bunkering was installed and the entire area sculpted and contoured to provide a realistic target
for golfers to practice upon. Once again Contour's expertise on difficult sites was put to the test as Eichler pointed
out, "The weather held us up back in the spring - the rain turned the fill material into a sponge. In fact we couldn't
even walk on it to take levels so we had to put one of our guys in a digger bucket just to take accurate readings."
Closer to home for the Daventry based Contour is Staverton Park GC owned by Initial Style Conferences. Again the job
was to rebuild a driving range and the five target green layout has been accompanied by a 600 square metre grass
tee. The rebuild became necessary after the existing covered bay had to be demolished to make way for a clubhouse
extension, the spoil from which was used as subsoil for the five target greens. The sand based tee was turfed using
'Medallion' from Rolawn - a dwarf rye/fescue mix.
